When is a repaired tyre safe?
A repaired tyre is safe when the damage was within the limits for repair and the repair was carried out after a thorough inspection. In practice, three conditions are needed.
- The hole was small and in the tread, not on the shoulder or sidewall.
- The tyre wasn't driven a long way while flat, which damages the internal structure.
- The repair was carried out using a suitable method and, ideally, with the tyre removed and checked on the inside.
The criteria are explained in detail in when can a tyre be repaired.
How long does a repair last?
A permanent repair carried out properly can generally last as long as the rest of the tyre: there's no fixed "expiry date". Temporary fixes are a different matter.
| Type of repair | Nature | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Sealant from a kit | Temporary | Have the tyre checked as soon as possible |
| String plug from the outside | Often considered temporary | Consider a check with the tyre removed |
| Repair from the inside after inspection | Permanent, if the damage was repairable | Normal use, with the usual checks |
The differences between the methods are explained in mushroom patch or string plug repair.
What does the lifespan of a repair depend on?
The lifespan of a repair depends above all on the condition of the tyre and the quality of the work, not just on the hole itself.
- Age and wear: an old tyre or one with almost no tread left has a limited remaining life anyway.
- Position and size of the hole: the closer it is to the shoulder or the larger it is, the more borderline the repair.
- Use at low pressure: even a few kilometres driven while flat can weaken the structure.
- Subsequent maintenance: correct pressure and regular checks help the repair last.
Can you drive on the motorway with a repaired tyre?
With a permanent repair carried out properly, generally yes, under the normal conditions of use intended for that tyre. With a temporary repair, on the other hand, the limits set by the kit manufacturer or the technician apply.
If you're unsure what type of repair you've had, ask the tyre specialist explicitly whether it's permanent or temporary and whether there are any restrictions.
Which signs indicate a problem after a repair?
The signs of a problem after a repair are mainly a renewed loss of pressure, vibrations and visible deformation.
- The repaired tyre loses pressure more than the others: the repair may not be airtight or there may be another leak (see slow puncture: how to find the hole).
- The pressure warning light comes back on.
- Vibrations through the steering wheel that started after the repair: the wheel balance may need checking.
- Bulges or swelling on the sidewall: the tyre must be replaced (see bulge on a tyre).

Frequently asked questions
Can I fit a repaired tyre on the front axle?
Generally yes, if the repair is permanent and the tyre is in good condition. Some people prefer to fit the repaired tyre at the rear as a precaution, but the choice depends on the vehicle and the condition of the other tyres: ask the technician who carried out the repair for advice.
Does a repair change the tyre's speed rating?
A repair carried out properly within the repair limits doesn't change the tyre's markings, but some manufacturers give specific instructions for repaired tyres, particularly high-performance ones. Check the manufacturer's instructions or ask the tyre specialist.
How soon should I recheck a repaired tyre?
It's useful to check the pressure in the days after the repair, to make sure it stays as steady as the other tyres. After that, just return to your usual pressure and wear checks. If you notice a leak, have the repair checked straight away.
Can a tyre specialist refuse to repair a tyre?
Yes, and they usually do so for safety reasons: if after inspection the damage turns out to be beyond the repair limits, or the internal structure is compromised, the repair wouldn't be reliable. In that case the right solution is to replace the tyre.
