When do you need a wheel change?

You need a wheel change when the tyre can't be repaired on the spot, for example after a tyre blowout, a cut tyre or sidewall damage, or when you want to get going straight away and have the tyre assessed later. When the damage is a small hole in the tread, on the other hand, an on-the-spot repair can be considered.

Why not change the wheel yourself?

You can do it yourself if you're somewhere safe, level and away from the traffic, and your tools are in order. Often, though, conditions aren't like that:

  • you're at the roadside with heavy traffic, on the ring road or in a narrow street;
  • the wheel nuts are done up tightly and won't budge with the car's own wrench;
  • the ground is sloping or soft and the jack isn't stable;
  • the jack, wrench or locking wheel nut adapter is missing;
  • the wheel is heavy, as on SUVs and vans.

In these cases it's safer to call +39 377 326 0999.

Locking wheel nuts: what do you need to do?

If your car has locking wheel nuts, i.e. with a shaped head that can only be undone with a specific adapter, tell us straight away on the phone and have the key adapter ready. Without the adapter, removing the wheel becomes much more complicated.

Where to look for it:

  • in the spare wheel well or with the car's tools;
  • in the glovebox or the side storage compartments;
  • in the wallet holding the owner's manual.

If you can't find it, let us know anyway: we'll work out together what to do before setting off.

What are the limits of a space-saver?

A space-saver is a smaller spare wheel designed for temporary use: it lets you reach a tyre fitter, not drive normally.

SpeedAs for the other wheelsMaximum shown on the space-saver, typically 80 km/h
UseCan be longer-term, if the tyre is in good conditionTemporary

With a space-saver fitted, drive carefully, avoid sharp braking and also check the space-saver's pressure, which is often different from the other wheels: you'll find it on the space-saver itself or in the owner's manual. Find out more in the guide repair kit or space-saver.

What if you don't have a spare wheel?

Many recent cars have neither a spare wheel nor a space-saver, just a repair kit or run-flat tyres. In this case a wheel change isn't possible with the on-board equipment, but other solutions can be considered: read the no spare wheel page and call us with your tyre size.

What should you prepare before we arrive?

For a smooth wheel change, it helps if you have:

  1. the spare wheel or space-saver accessible, emptying the boot if necessary;
  2. the locking wheel nut key adapter, if fitted;
  3. the handbrake on and, with an automatic gearbox, the selector in P;
  4. the size of the punctured tyre, useful for the next steps.

Frequently asked questions

I've lost my locking wheel nut key: can you remove the wheel?

Without the key adapter, removing a locking wheel nut is more complicated and not always possible on the spot. Let SOS Tyre know on +39 377 326 0999 before the job, giving the vehicle model and type of nuts: we'll assess the situation together. Also check in the spare wheel well and the glovebox.

How many kilometres can I drive on a space-saver?

A space-saver is designed for temporary use, to get you to a tyre fitter. There's no single mileage: stick to the maximum speed shown on the space-saver, typically 80 km/h, and the guidance in the owner's manual. Have the original tyre replaced or repaired as soon as possible.

My spare wheel is old: can it be used?

A spare wheel that has never been used can still age. Check the production date with the DOT code, where the last four digits show the week and year, as well as the pressure and that there are no cracks. If there are doubts about its condition, the technician will tell you before fitting it.

What happens to the punctured tyre after the wheel change?

The punctured tyre stays with you, in the boot. If the damage is a small hole in the tread, it can be assessed for repair; if it's on the sidewall or the tyre has been driven on deflated for a long way, it usually needs replacing. We'll tell you what we saw during the job.
